Health Surveillance

Statutory health surveillance for employers, designed and overseen by consultant occupational physicians. R-Health runs surveillance programmes for police forces, local authorities, universities, dental practices and private employers across the UK, on your site, at our Edgware clinic, or a combination of the two.

What health surveillance is

Health surveillance is the planned, repeated assessment of employees exposed to a specific workplace hazard, carried out to detect early signs of work-related ill health so that exposure can be controlled before harm becomes permanent. It is not a general medical and it is not a substitute for controlling exposure at source. Where a risk assessment identifies a hazard covered by health and safety legislation, surveillance is a legal duty rather than a benefit.

Programmes we deliver

Hand-arm vibration (HAVS)

Tiered HAVS assessment under the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, from screening questionnaires through to formal clinical diagnosis and fitness advice. Our clinical lead holds HAVS Tier 3 and Tier 4 accreditation, so diagnostic assessments are carried out in house rather than referred on.

Respiratory surveillance

Spirometry and respiratory questionnaires for employees exposed to dusts, fumes, isocyanates, flour, wood dust and other respiratory sensitisers under COSHH.

Audiometry

Hearing checks for employees exposed above the action values in the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, with categorisation and onward referral where results indicate noise-induced hearing loss.

Skin surveillance

Assessment for occupational dermatitis in wet-work, catering, cleaning, hairdressing and engineering roles.

Lead and asbestos medical surveillance

Statutory medical surveillance under the Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002 and the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, including the long-term record-keeping duties those regulations impose.

How delivery works

  • On your site. Our mobile unit brings screening to the workplace, which removes travel time and keeps shift patterns intact. See mobile health surveillance.
  • At our clinic. Individual and small-group appointments in Edgware, north-west London.
  • Reporting. Anonymised group-level reporting for your health and safety team, individual fitness advice to the employee and their manager, and health records retained for the periods the relevant regulations require.

Getting a programme in place

Most employers come to us with a risk assessment and no surveillance programme, or with a programme that has drifted out of date. We review what your risk assessment identifies, tell you what the law actually requires, and quote for the surveillance that follows from it rather than for a standard package.
